The ole drive train started ghost shifting a few weeks ago during the White Lighting race. I figured it was just the mud, no biggie. So I cleaned it up but it continued. Had it worked on before Younger's but the misshifting was so severe that it forced me to DNF. So far, we've replaced the cable housings, the chain, rear cog, and the rear derailleur (twice) with no luck.
Part of the challenge is, the problem will not duplicate in the stand or in the parking lot. It only happens when you apply extreme force to the pedals during a climb and is especially prone to happen when you come out of the saddle on short steeps. I'm not talking about a little quirky annoying ghost shift, I'm talking about the ones that can throw you off the bike. It sounds like its slipping and stripping teeth. I'm actually leery to push it hard. (kind of reminds me of anxious feeling you have have while cranking a jack-in-the-box)
A friend had previously suggested replacing the front rings but the thought was dismissed as we focused on the rear. During last nights ride we determined that its auto shifting in the middle ring only. We could not get it to ghost shift in neither the granny or the big ring. So now we're going to replace the front middle and see if that does the trick. Once this is done, the only thing that we have not replaced are the shifters.
Has anyone experienced anything similar to this? There's been much debate as to what the problem could be. I'm curious to hear your opinions and suggestions.

Yes it is..... so at least we know the bearings are going to last longer than one season. ha! |

| You might want to check those bearings or the bottom bracket if its in the front (I'm confused as to which end is ghost shifting). That could cause it to act like that. |

| I had the exact same problem on my Cake. The bike was great in the stand. Under loads however, it would act exactly like you have described. I did everything you have done except change the rear der. As it turned out, I had a broken and bent tooth on the upper jockey wheel. I replaced them both with aluminum wheels and haven't had any more issues. |

| Have you checked the cable routing? Perhaps one of the lengths from the cable stop to the rear der is just a bit too short, then when the suspension compresses, might be pulling the cable. Have someone sit on the bike and put weight on and off the saddle to try and make the suspension move to see if when the suspension moves, the cable is pulling the der. If all else has failed, might try running full length housing from the shifter to rear der. |

Sorry, I left out that the hanger checked out okay and we also experimented with different cable housing lengths.
No accidental or subconscious shifting but thanks for playing RICO.
Last Friday we replaced the middle chain ring and all is good.
I know...... it makes no sense. If anyone can explain it, please do. |

Richard, you remember that EX9 I had. Let me take a wild guess here,, you have rapid rise XT. If I'm correct, DUMP the CRAP!!! You will spend a life time fooling with this junk. The reg XT stuff seems to work fine but the rapid rise is a whole nother animal. ON SOME set-ups you just can not get everything tweek the way it needs. I did eveything poss and finally got some results out of buying Shim- XTR cables. Mine was the same, it always ghost shifted around the mid of the cass. On the stand and parking lot it no issues. Take it to the woods and after the frist mile here came the ghost shift!!! Man it sucked!!!!!! Fooled with that junk for two yr's. No more!!
I know this will strike a cord with some here but I now have Sram XO and have had no problems this yr and everyone knows how wet it's been. My drive train looks like hell. I've not cleaned the thing yet minus hosing the rough off and it still works fine. |

We replaced the front rings a couple of weeks before the Montgomery Bell race. It worked like a charm! It should, considering it has an all new drive train.
It was so bizarre. We were so focused on the rear end. We even installed a new XTR rear but it didn't cooperate until we changed the front ring. Still doesn't make since? It must have been a cluster of issues. |
