Fellow Bikers,
Here is the obituary and info on the cyclist's services. Jen
Futrell's mother, Barbara Hedspeth, is a close friend of mine.
Visitation will be 4-9 p.m. Monday at the Crescent Hill
Presbyterian Church. A service of celebration of her life will be held
there as well on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.
As Jen believed in local food and gathering around foods, you might bring a finger
food to share at both services.
Thank you!
Mark Atwell (aka Snake)
Please forward to anyone that I might have missed.
FUTRELL,
JENNIFER ELLEN, 29, died Saturday, October 4, 2008. She is survived by
her mother, Barbara Hedspeth; father, James Futrell; sister, Elizabeth
Futrell; stepmother, Katherine Futrell; grandparents, Joyce Pearce, of
Poplar Bluff, MO and Faye Futrell and great-grandmother Opal Evitts,
both of Paducah, KY. Also surviving are the many, many dear friends in
her 'chosen' extended family. An avid musician, writer, chef,
bicyclist, activist and organizer in Louisville's vibrant alternative
arts community, Jennifer (Jen, to her friends) was a passionate
supporter of her city. She talked and walked a unique path through
life, touching many and always allowing herself to be changed and
nurtured by others. The victim of a tragic accident, her last act of
giving, aside from the cherished memories of her brief but significant
life, was the gift of life to others through the Kentucky Organ Donor
Affiliates program. Visitation will be 4-9 p.m. Monday at the Crescent
Hill Presbyterian Church. A service of celebration of her life will be
held there as well on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. Donations in lieu of other
expressions of sympathy may be made to Seeds of Peace or Safe Streets
Louisville. Rest well, our sweet warrior child. You were and always
will be loved and cherished. |

Hey Weak Think. Since when has the Conservative Right done a damn thing for cyclist on or off-road? You think it was Cheney trying to get us some rights ya nitwit? The Monkey in Chief? The fellas out riding their ORVs on Waverly are all lefties? When's the last time YOU entered into a "level headed" environmental discussion? Gee, the world must look awful brown with your head so far up your butt....

Thanks for the info on the funeral, Mark. I'll spread the word and look for you there. In case you don't see me, I'll be sitting on the left of the church with all the other WD-40 for brains. I don't think the link-ster will make it, though - he's really busy. Once he wraps up his polarizing diatribes here, he's going to be tied up with a whole bunch of other educational activities, bike safety courses and trail building programs that he hosts. Model citizen - and so compassionate. |

Am I missing something here? Someone died on Bardstown Road. I saw the report in the paper. It was sad. What were the details of her accident? I know she wasn't wearing a helmet. Did that make any difference? Was she riding responsibly? Was the auto driver drunk? Speeding? On drugs? None of that has been ediscussed here. Not one word. Instead, all I've read is a proposal to close off Bardstown Road with cyclists. Is that a constructive thing? A compassionate thing? A progressive thing? Will it prevent anyone in the universe from being the next accident victim? Do you people for one minute think signing a petition or participating in some mass activity somehow makes you "good"? Fasterdulin, you speak insultingly from blind ignorance. Feel free to PM or email me if you want to convince me you're not a fool. I'll be happy to discuss this with you privately. |

| from what I hear on lexington news, she switched lanes and was struck from behind by a van that was moving more quickly. Not that you consider me or the "liberal media" a credible source or anything TWL |

| TWL, I am interested in whether you think any "action" is a good idea and if so what that might be. |

There are a lot of details missing about this accident. I have heard from a few sources, one that was on the scene shortly after the accident, that the van was passing a city bus (bus in left lane) on the right when they struck the cyclist. I drove by it and while I could not see much, the bus and van were positioned in a way that was consistant with that story.
Not sure if she was changing lanes or not. She was not wearing a helmet. |

KY drivers don't even know how to use turn signals, much less avoid cyclists.

| I participated in the sunday critical mass ride. We did not block the road. We followed the rules of the road. When we saw other cycles breaking those rules we let them know and attempted to educate them. Sorry Weak LInk, it was not what you were hoping for. |

Wow! I'm grateful I wasn't flamed to Hades after the last rant. Thank you all. I appreciate it. I was up late Sunday (ER call) and was in no mode to be triffled with yesterday. I think there needs to be some sort of mass education campaign. I think often cyclists bring our troubles on ourselves. I can't tell you how often I see crazy cycling activity that makes me cringe. Having said that, I was almost side-swipped last weekend by an SUV driver who was offended that I blew through a stop sign, even though there was no one at the intersection. The driver of the SUV was 50 yards behind me when it happened and thought that was a justification for almost injuring me. If I would have had a can of Mace and would have been quick enough I would have fired it though his stupid power window. Peace (through superior fire-power). |

Thanks, twl. Whether or not you're directing that at anyone in particular, I appreciate your note. Of course, I did write a flaming response, but those types of speeches never really come across as intended and I decided this one might be better left un-sent. You're absolutely right, though - it's time to develop a mass education campaign. I've made a lot of calls and met with a lot of different groups over the last couple of days and there's definitely broad support for some kind of educational action. Even the leaders of uber-lefty-anarchist-alley-cat types recognize their bad habits and are anxious to get involved. I don't want to commit you to anything - and I'm certainly not the guy in charge - but there's a bit of truth in what you said about the public's perception of activists and it would certainly help if a moderate doctor was part of (or leading) the bicycle education effort. I truly do have a lot of contacts and would like to help out (rationally, of course). Drop me a line if you'd like to discuss. Peace (through Superious Fanington) |

TWL, i have been on that side of retaliation many times before. my standard responses are usually "and my running a stop sign affected you how exactly?" or "you just broke 6 laws to my one, so i got some more signs to run" and the always favorite "youre right, i broke the law then you tried to kill me. lets call the cops and have them settle this." it also never ceases to amaze me how many of these people do these things in company vans/trucks or with a name tag in view. i got in a shouting match one day with a guy who just wanted to show me who was boss for no good reason. after a few minutes of pointless yelling, i see his bass pro shops employee id hanging. i instantly calmed, said, "well bill (or whatever), you have bothered me at work, i will see you tomorrow at your work" his attitude changed in a hurry. |

| If anyone has noticed TWL has become increasingly hostile as of late. His docile demeanor seems to have transformed into some self absorbed tandem road Nazi. I'm now starting to wonder if the ER call wasn't to remove his own head from his sphincter. |

| MEK, if you're going to jam that stuff up there anymore, call someone else to fish it out at midnight. I think you're taking advantage of our friendship sometimes. |
