Does anyone know how to calculate/estimate VO2 max by using heart rate monitor/cycle computer data?

I've been trying to figure out an easy way to calculate VO2, but have found that there isn't really one. To answer my own question, I found a calculator to do this, but you need to know such things as grade of hill so that you can calculate the power in watts expended. You can't really just use ride data like I thought you might, because you need to be at maximum effort throughout a VO2 max test. So I guess the easiest test to do that I have found is the Rockport Fitness walking test which I plan on doing soon. http://www.brianmac.co.uk/rockport.htm The reason I am interested in finding out is so that I can get an idea of what kind of shape my heart is in. I wear a HRM on my MTB rides and on a typical ride I will exceed the recommended training HR. I guess these typical rides would be considered over training for me. If I try to stay in the recommended training zones, I find myself slowing down a lot |

start rant Back in the Singletrack.net days, people (besides ones I personally know) answered my noobie mtb posts. I guess it just goes to show how eccentric and disconnected from the local mtb forum I've gotten since then. Obviously, I'm not one of the cool people on this forum or probably in this town. And you know, I'm glad about that. And people say B.Obama is elitist. Oh, sorry, we're not supposed to get off topic around here. end rant |

| I want to apologize for my previous post. I had a bad day and was in a bad mood. I've met and road with a lot of fine people from the forum at trail days, on the trails, and at races. I guess my threads/posts are obscure, too personal and hard to participate in. I used to have the handle riptide on some of the previous forums going back to singletrack. |

You guys are all freaks. That's what the deal is. Calculating vo max? Are you guys in the tour? Loosing regional races by mere seconds? Taking epo? Single? VO max for most of us is when we fall off and puke. Hope that helps! |

| Sorry, guys, at the time I posted this I was having some really weird health issues that was affecting my heart, giving me palpitations, and high blood pressure. And so I was looking into trying to get more information on my heart output. I'm not a racer and I'm not fast. I'll tell you this though, to be any kind of mountain biker you have to have a fairly good cardio system. Come to find out my problem had to do with being switched to a generic blood pressure medicine in Nov 2007. I have recently discovered that many, many people had the same problems that I had. There's even a consumer report about it. |
