Need a break from riding with the boys? Tired of riding alone? Have you been wondering just how far you can go - literally & figuratively - on that bike of yours? If so, SKIRT RIDES is right up your alley. It's a group of girls who like to ride, want to learn more, get better and faster & maybe ... just one day - race. Louisville's very own AnnaJean Dallaire (a.k.a Niki) of Sobe-Cannondale heads up the SKIRT RIDES with challenging road rides, complete with drills, workouts, and priceless tips on all things cycling. SKIRT RIDES is the perfect place to take your riding up a notch in a totally supportive environment. Join us for a Monday night ride - make some new friends, be challenged - learn to love that bike and channel some inner girl power.
What to Expect from Skirt Rides:
Skirt Rides are for any female cyclist who is interested in either racing or becoming a stronger rider. Our focus is to develop overall fitness, bike handling, pack riding, race tactics and as well as training and riding skills to inprove your confidence on your bike and to become a better overall cyclist. While many members are active racers, (on the road, in the dirt and in triathlons) we aim to provide a comfortable place for riders to develop their personal goals. While the focus is certainly on the girls, we will occasionally have some guest riders provide specific clinics to our group. Often, these come from some of the best male racers in the area.
Part social group, part training group and all fun, we center everything around two orgnized rides a week; an intro ride and a workout ride.
What Skirt Rides Expect from You:
First and formost, that you have an interest in taking your cycling up a level and you like to have fun and learn new skills from area racers. Additionaly, in order to enjoy yourself, we do ask that you have some basic cycling experience and a minimum fitness level on your bike. While we don't want to discourage anyone from joining skirt rides, we're just not able to take on brand new riders as there are many better opportunities for those brand new riders with the Louisville Bicycle Club.
At a minimum you should be able to:
Ride your bike for an hour above 16 mph average
Understand the basics of your bike; clipping in, starting, stopping, shifting gears, etc.
Be reasonably comforable riding around other riders
Know the rules of the road
How Fast Do We Go?
That depends on the ride and any specific clinic we're holding. Generally, Monday rides are the slower intro ride and will average at or below 18 mph on rolling terrain. The new addition of a Thursday ride will be the workout ride which will leave with the Thursday night group rides from Cycler's Cafe. These rides average at or about 20 mph over a longer course on open roads.
What are the Rides About?
We have two rides a week. Each has a specific purpose and is designed for different fitness and skills.
Monday Intro/Recovery Rides These rides will stay in Cherokee & Seneca parks, and include a clinic at least once a month. On clinic days, we'll have a "guest coach" and work on individual skills: cornering, climbing, sprinting, etc ...
Thursday Advanced/Workout Rides These rides will join the Thursday night group ride that leaves from Cycler's. This will be the workout / race simulation ride during which we'll work on more team tactics: rotating pacelines, attacks, bridging, etc...
When are the Rides?
Intro/Recovery Rides - Monday nights at 6:30.
Thursday Advanced/Workout Rides - Thursday nights at 6:30
Where are the Rides?
All rides start and leave from Cycler's Cafe (2295 Lexington Road, Louisville, KY)
How to I Communicate with other Skirts?
Right here on Bikeclicks - you can post up any general message in the forum - ask a question, organize a ride, talk about a ride, etc ... or - you can send members personal messages by clicking on their avatar on BikeClicks. You'll see a list of Skirt members in the Skirt Ride section of the "BikeCliques" (see above navigation bar). If you are not a member yet, please join!
What about Dirt Skirts and Cyclocross Rides & training?
For now, there are no formal Dirt Skirt CX nights planned - but all are encouraged to go to the cross practice that is held at the RRCC (River Road Country Club) on Wednesday nights at 6pm. If you are or know someone who is experienced at 'cross and would like to head up a group on this night, let me know!
What about weather cancellations?
Wet roads or rain at start of ride cancels the ride.

WebGirl | Way to go Niki ... she just nabbed her 2nd National Championship in as many days! Finish line sprint at today's road race was one of the most exciting things I have ever seen ... and to hear that she FLATTED out on last lap and caught the group to take the win - amazing! Congratulations girl!

JUNE SKIRT RIDES
The June Skirt Rides will be true recovery/social rides. We will meet Mondays at 6:30 pm @ Cycler’s Café. The route will likely vary between park loops and/or the TNW route (the route, not the pace) and will be determined each Monday.
Most of the regular skirts are racing and/or recovering from racing … if you feel the need to hammer, do so before joining us – we’ll be your cool down ride!
Minimum requirements: the ability to hold 17-20 mph as a conversational pace, a comfort level of riding in a group (two-up, conversational pace line) and a comfort level in traffic (River Road).
If you have any questions, post up!!! someone will answer!
WebGirl | May Skirt Rides
Here’s the word from Niki: the May Skirt rides will meet Monday nights at 6pm @ Cycler’s Café. We will do the same route as the Cycler’s Tuesday Night ride (a.k.a Tuesday Night Worlds’ / or TNW). Same route & essentially, same concept – Skirt Worlds’. In other words: Bring your game face. We’ll hand out cue sheets at the start of the ride so you know where you are in case you get dropped. And according to our fearless leader, Niki – many will get dropped. I’ll paraphrase here, but I think Niki said – “nothing will teach you how to get faster or better or the benefits of getting on someones’ wheel like getting dropped”
The next few weeks’ rides come with some minimum requirements: a road bike, the ability to sit in on a 19-20 mph draft (rides will go as low as 18 mph steady tempo with 22mph surges); and the ability to get yourself home if/when you fall off the back. A sense of humor & knowing your limits are also an asset!
